Louis Gaudinot considering losing his green mop of hair after UFC on Fox 3 win

Louis Gaudinot became known for his green hair while a castmember on “The Ultimate Fighter,” but it got a bit out of hand on Saturday night at UFC on Fox 3. He won his bout over John Lineker by submission and the Fight of the Night bonus, but his long, thick, green hair became the focus of the bout. Dana White even joked that is was time for a cut.

Gaudinot told MMA Junkie Radio that he’s thinking of cutting his hair, but he’ll still keep it green.

“I was thinking about cutting it before the fight,” Gaudinot said. “I’m kind of used to the long hair now, but I think I might have to cut it just for the next fight so it doesn’t get in my face.”

I can’t understand why he would want to do that.

It’s not like it got in his eyes.

Or made it easier for judges to tell when he got punched.

Yeah, on second thought, visiting a barbershop may not be such a bad idea, Louis.

UFC on Fox 3 ratings dropped off from previous shows

Though Saturday’s UFC card on Fox was the best of the three cards that have aired on the network. Unfortunately, it was also the least-viewed of the three. Saturday’s fights pulled in 2.25 million viewers, less than the four million plus who watched UFC on Fox 1 and 2. The UFC won the key demographic of adults 18-49, but lost badly in overall ratings to CBS’ “48 Hours Mystery.”

There are several reasons for this drop-off in viewers:

– Lack of star power: The main card was not stocked with bankable stars, like in the past two events. There was no belt on the line, no outspoken promoter like Chael Sonnen, no well-known former champ like Rashad Evans. While Josh Koscheck has the reputation of being an MMA bad boy, it wasn’t anywhere near what Sonnen and Davis brought to the last card. The shame is that the performances were great and had nothing to do with the names written on a fight card.

– Mayweather/Cotto: Though the UFC did not go up directly against the marquee boxing match-up of the year, the Floyd Mayweather/Miguel Cotto bout did not help. Much of the week’s pre-fight coverage was devoted to the big boxing event instead of MMA bouts, and contributed to the lack of buzz around the UFC fights.

– No football: Something that hurt the UFC that they had no control over is that there was no football to promote the events. For the UFC’s first two events on Fox, the NFL was in-season and gave considerable promotion to fights. Cain Velasquez appeared on set with the NFL on Fox crew, and ads were run throughout games. Without football and its broad audience and huge ratings, the UFC didn’t have as much of a promotional push to pull in casual fans.

Did you watch Saturday’s fights? Why or why not? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

53-year-old knocks out opponent half his age

Let’s hear it for the old guys! 53-year-old Tim Karaker showed up at Fire Extreme in Bourbonnais, Ill. last week and was asked to fight. He said yes, and knocked out 21-year-old Brandon Frey. Watch his MMA debut here, and skip to the 2:30 mark for the KO. UFC fighter Stephan Bonnar narrates and lets a few NSFW words slip.

Apparently, the medical personnel who is supposed to be at that fight were out for a walk, because they weren’t too quick in responding to Frey on the ground. Nonetheless, congratulations to Karaker. You’re now the hero of Bonnar as well as every man over the age of 50 who wanted to throw some leather at a youngun but couldn’t actually get in a cage with him.

Nate Diaz, Jim Miller make weight at UFC on Fox 3 weigh-ins in New Jersey

Jim Miller made weight in front of his home crowd at the Izod Center in Newark, just a half hour from where he trains. His opponent, Nate Diaz, also made weight to make their five-round fight on Saturday official.

The rest of the weigh-ins were uneventful. Danny Castillo sported the best outfit, coming to the stage in what appeared to be a suit and tie, but tore off like track pants. John Dodson’s socks were the best accessory. John Lineker came in a pound heavy for his flyweight bout with Louis Gaudinot, and will hand over $1,200 to Gaudinot.

Complete weigh-in results from our friends at MMA Junkie:

MAIN CARD (FOX)
Nate Diaz (156) vs. Jim Miller (156)

John Dodson shows off his dance moves before UFC on Fox 3 weigh-ins (VIDEO

Just before weigh-ins, most fighters are cranky, to put it mildly. As they cut down to their fighting weight, they are hungry, often dehydrated, and eager to step on the scale and then go for a big meal with family and friends.

But not John Dodson. The flyweight who had cut all the way down to 126 lbs. couldn’t keep still in the line before weigh-ins.

Some days, you gotta dance, John. Totally understandable. Hopefully, this display will lead to an invitation on “Dancing with the Stars.” Who wouldn’t want to see Dodson whirl around the dance floor? He won his last four bouts. The mirror ball trophy could be his next big win.

Talks Jon Jones Moving to Heavyweight – Dana White

When a fighter dominates a weight class like Georges St-Pierre has done at welterweight, Anderson Silva has done at middleweight and now Jon Jones is doing at light heavyweight, the question always seems to come up when will the move weight classes? What happened to the days of just being great at one weight class? Well, UFC President Dana White agrees with that ideology especially when talking about their UFC light heavyweight champion pursuing a title at heavyweight.Looking at the monsters that walk around in the heavyweight division, White knows that Jones would already be at a disadvantage, and he’s hoping that if it ever does happen that he’s more than prepared for a big move like that.Check out what White had to say about Jones potential move to heavyweight and if it’s a smart move or not:

Tim Kennedy makes a convincing Black Swan (VIDEO)

Strikeforce middleweight contender is waiting on a date, time, and place for his expected fight with champion Luke Rockhold. While he has the time, he’s working on his acting chops. Is it just me, or does he make a convincing “Black Swan?” He already did a great job as Katy Perry, so what else do we want to see Kennedy try? He seems to be a fan of costumes, so Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone with the Wind?” Capt. Willard from “Apocalypse Now” could bring in both his military background and love of make-up. If Strikeforce keeps him (inexplicably) on ice much longer, Kennedy will be up for an Academy Award soon.

MMA in New York bill fails again

Though MMA earned a victory when Vermont decided to legalize the sport last week, it suffered a defeat when a bill to legalize the sport was stopped before it could reach the floor. Assembly leader Sheldon Silver decided the bill didn’t have enough votes to pass.

After years of lobbying and hoping to have an event at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the UFC is disappointed that they will have to fight on another year. Zuffa vice president of government and regulatory affairs Marc Ratner was unhappy that the bill didn’t even come to a vote.

“I feel 150% if we had a vote on the floor of the Assembly, we would win,” Ratner said. “Not to get a vote is un-American.”

Earlier this year, UFC president Dana White “guaranteed” that MMA would be in New York this year. He said the UFC wanted to bring fights not just to NYC, but to Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, too.

Losing the chance to get MMA in the third largest state is particularly hard to swallow considering the UFC just brought an event to the NYC-area over the weekend. Though the UFC on Fox 3 fights and weigh-ins were in East Rutherford, N.J., other pre-fight events were in Manhattan. They showed how an event can bring money to the area, but still were spurned by the legislature.

Will MMA make it to the Empire State? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Weekend warriors: Eddie Alvarez and Andreas Spang make headlines

Though the weekend was dominated by some title fight in Atlanta, Friday night’s Bellator and “The Ultimate Fighter” bouts brought plenty of excitement, both during and after the fights.

At Bellator, Eddie Alvarez made quick work of Shinya Aoki in their rematch, as Aoki had no answer for Alvarez’s striking. Aoki’s corner threw in the towel seconds before the match was stopped two minutes into the first round.

As shown in the video above, Andreas Spang took out Brian Rogers with a left hook in the second round after Rogers had been winning the bout. Afterwards, Spang gave the crowd in Cleveland two middle fingers and got in a scrap with Maiquel Falcao. Though he expects to be disciplined by the Ohio Athletic Commission, his spot in the middleweight tourney is safe.

He’ll face Falcao there after Falcao earned his spot by outlasting Vyacheslav Vasilevsky to a split decision. In the lightweight tournament, Rick Hawn took just a round and 10 seconds to knock out Lloyd Woodard, while Brent Weedman took a split decision from Thiago Michel.

On TUF, Vinc Pichel and John Cofer turned in a three-round decision that was one of the best fights of the season. The first round featured stand-up which could have gone to either fighter, while Pichel’s grappling gave him the second. In the third, Pichel got a quick takedown and arm triangle choke to get the win for Team Cruz. On Friday, Sam Sicilia from Team Cruz will fight Team Faber’s Chris Saunders.

Anheuser-Busch unhappy with remarks made by UFC fighters

The UFC’s marquee sponsor is not happy with the actions of some their athletes, and they spoke up about it in Advertising Age. Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of the Bud Light brands that are featured prominently in the Octagon, talked about their displeasure.

“We’ve communicated to the UFC our displeasure with certain remarks made by some of its fighters, and they have promised to address this. If the incidents continue, we will act,” the brewer said in a statement. A-B, which did not elaborate on potential actions, also stated that it “embraces diversity and does not condone insensitive and derogatory comments rooted in ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc.”

The UFC responded to Ad Age:

“Unlike most other sports leagues, we encourage our athletes to engage online. It is part of our company culture, and whenever you are at the forefront of a trend or initiative, it comes with its own pitfalls. We will continue to embrace social media while looking for better ways to stay in front of the issues. This includes a mandate for our athletes to attend sensitivity training and a seminar on proper use of social media.”

The problem is not that the UFC has athletes who say and do stupid things. Every organization — from a small family-run business to the largest multi-national conglomerates — has people who do and say stupid things. The problem is with how the UFC has (or hasn’t) dealt with the issues.

There is little consistency with how the UFC has dealt with the dumb things said by their athletes. Some, like Miguel Torres, were cut. Some, like Rashad Evans, were rebuked privately. Some, like Quinton Jackson, were ignored.

A comprehensive code of conduct for athletes, including clear examples of crossing the line and fair punishments for such actions, would not just be the fair thing for UFC fighters, but would also prevent them from getting a public rebuke from their biggest sponsor. It’s just good business.

Reader Rants: Cagereaders sound off on Quinton Jackson, future champs and more

It’s time to check in with Cagereaders on their opinions on the latest in MMA news. We hear your thoughts on Quinton Jackson, which belts will change hands, and most importantly, Louis Gaudinot’s hair. Want your thoughts included in a future reader rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your timeline.

How do you solve a problem like “Rampage?” Some Cagereaders have ideas.

There are a lot of people that make the UFC money, but once you start losing, your marketability dwindles. Add in the general consensus that Quinton doesn’t care anymore and seemingly doesn’t want to evolve his game; you’ll see that this is not a benefit for anyone involved. Have him fight the final time on his contract and let him go. Throw him in against a mid-tier fighter on the undercard (like they did with Arlovski years ago) and move on. — Ryan Wahl

Although I used to be a huge fan of Rampage and am less so these days, reading Quinton’s words makes me consider if what he wants is the same thing I think certain other fighters want: Big fights with no title implications. I think there are a handfull of fighter who just want to hammer checks and generally not worry about rank or title. In other words fighters may be hunting for financial security for what they do and not a title shot where some of their limitations could be exposed. I say the UFC should have Quinton fight guys with great stand up, let him makes some money, put on some great stand up fights and everyone wins. Sometimes you just give the baby his bottle until he grows out of it. — Mark Jimerson

With nearly every UFC belt on the line this summer, will any change hands?

I love this current batch of champions. I think it’s good for the sport to have dominant champs. That being said, I think the one most likely to lose in his next fight is Benson Henderson, but I think that JDS has less of a gap on the field in his weight class (Mir is a mismatch.) But Ben Henderson became somewhat of a superhuman to me after his last fight when he told his corner man he could go another five rounds, and seemed perfectly able to do so. In a way, that was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen watching years of MMA. — John Wilcox

Cagereaders tuned into Invicta FC’s all-female card.

Shows there are a lot of different weight classes that are competitive. Not just the Strikeforce 135! Great show, lots of heart by the women warriors! — David Feinblatt

And onto the most important point of discussion: Should Louis Gaudinot cut his hair?

God yes. Every second that a fighter has to spend getting hair out of his eyes is a second in which he is losing the fight. — Bruce Garrison
